Property Valuation
Carried out by a Chartered Surveyor or suitably qualified valuer and usually done for a mortgage lender, information or family asset division.
The cost on average will be in the range of £200 to £400.
Homebuyer survey & valuation
Carried out by a Chartered General Practice Surveyor or a Chartered Building Surveyor who will look at the complete property and provide a qualified opinion as to whether the house is value for money to the buyer. This type of survey typically suitable if the property is of a straightforward construction and has not had any major alterations carried out upon it.
Typically the cost is in the range of £300 to £600.
Full Building Survey
A full building survey on the average house is carried out by a Chartered Building Surveyor. He/she will look at the complete property and provide a detailed opinion regarding the condition of the property. This is more suited to older properties and properties that have had major alterations.
Typically the cost is in the range of £400 to £800.
General Structural Inspection
Carried out by a Chartered Engineer or a Structural Engineer who will concentrate solely on the structural aspects of the property (foundations, walls and roof). This survey is most useful to prospective purchasers intending comprehensive improvements and refurbishments.

Probate valuation
Usually commissioned by a solicitor or an executor of an estate who requires the property to be valued to satisfy obligations to the beneficiaries and liability for inheritance tax.
Typical cost is in the range of £200 to £400.
Specific Structural Inspections
Sometimes called for following an earlier survey where the surveyor has identified a potential problem and has recommended further investigation.
